Alere GmbH (formally Inverness Medical Deutschland GmbH) is a provider of medical diagnostics in the fields of cardiovascular diseases, infectious diseases, women’s health and prenatal care, testing for drugs of abuse and oncology.

The company supports doctors and patients by developing simple diagnostic equipment to ensure better quality in inpatient and outpatient care. Alere is derived from Latin and means to nurture, to care for or to support. The name communicates the company’s objectives to provide physicians and patients with easy-to-use rapid diagnostic tests, a comprehensive portfolio of clinical and laboratory diagnostics as well as health monitoring and health management services.

With its point-of-care rapid diagnostic tests, Alere improves the quality of patient care. Alere’s product line includes tests for rapid and early diagnosis of cardiac insufficiency, myocardial infarction, acute kidney damage, HIV infection, and tests for the exclusion of acute risk of premature delivery. In addition, Alere supports the patients’ self-management, for example by offering an easy-to-use device to monitor blood coagulation, which patients can use at home.
